CognEYEzant:52, On Perception, Reflection, and a Year within the Golden Spiral

The project

52 weeks, 26 paintings, 14 essays, 1 spiral.

CognEYEzant:52 was a reflective process all about perception. 14 “chapters” weave together a tangled web of perception (from monsters and darkness to solitude and maps). A web that stretches across the 26 illustrative paintings nestled inside a to-scale golden spiral.

Since perceptions are particularly spooky, haunting parts of our realities, so CognEYEzant:52 began on Día de los Muertos (November 1, 2019) and ended on Halloween (October 31, 2020).

“Introvert in the Window”, held at Higher Art Gallery, was an interactive and socially distant performance art event in which I completed CognEYEzant:52 by painting the golden spiral from October 24-31, 2020.

The exhibit invited viewers to interact with the project: watch the spiral unwind while listening to selected recorded essays. The title “The Introvert in the Window” explores how we can create connections, even separated by glass (screens or windows).

The Paintings

Now that CognEYEzant:52 is finished, it invites you to let your perceptions haunt you. To reflect on the perception fragments that we all make meaning out of, that create our own golden spirals, ones we live within like snails inside their shells.

This installation is inspired by mathematics because, like math, our perceptions are part of everything we do. The Fibonacci Sequence and golden spiral connect the twenty-six paintings in the 55″x91″ installation. Each painting fits into the sequence from zero to fifty-five, to the spiral itself.
